A new report from Truven Health Analytics has found that 70% of ER visits made by patients who have employer-sponsored health insurance are unnecessary. This is either because they were nonemergent problems, or that they could have been prevented by outpatient care. The overuse of emergency rooms leads to higher costs in the healthcare system, which could be reduced by taking advantage of preventative care and primary care physicians.
